Tenosynovitis

What is Tenosynovitis?

tenosynovitis Tenosynovitis is an inflammation of the sheath that surrounds a tendon, most commonly in the hands and wrists. This condition can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the affected area, especially during repetitive or gripping activities. It often develops from overuse, injury, or underlying health conditions like arthritis or diabetes.

If left untreated, tenosynovitis can lead to restricted movement or even tendon damage, making early diagnosis and treatment essential.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain or tenderness along the tendon, often near the wrist or base of the thumb
  • Swelling or warmth over the tendon
  • A creaking or grating sensation when moving the joint
  • Difficulty moving the affected finger or wrist
  • A feeling of catching or locking when bending or straightening the finger

Types of Tenosynovitis We Commonly Treat

  • Flexor Tenosynovitis (Trigger Finger): Causes locking or popping of the finger due to tendon inflammation
  • De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis: Affects tendons at the base of the thumb, common in new parents or with repetitive wrist motion
  • Extensor Tenosynovitis: Inflammation of tendons on the back of the hand or wrist, often from overuse

How We Diagnose It

Dr. Pittas will conduct a physical exam and review your symptoms and activity history. In some cases, additional imaging such as ultrasound may be used to evaluate tendon movement and inflammation.
