What is a Ganglion Cyst?
A ganglion cyst is a noncancerous, fluid-filled lump that most commonly develops along the tendons or joints of the wrist or hand. These cysts can vary in size and may change over time—sometimes shrinking or growing depending on activity levels. While usually harmless, ganglion cysts can become painful or interfere with movement if they press on nearby nerves or joints.
Common Symptoms
- A visible lump or bump near the wrist, hand, or fingers
- Pain or aching, especially with joint use
- Tingling or numbness if the cyst is pressing on a nerve
- Fluctuating size—may enlarge with activity and decrease with rest
- A sensation of weakness or reduced grip strength
How We Diagnose It
Dr. Pittas will examine the lump and assess how it moves and feels. A transillumination test (shining light through the cyst) can help determine if it's fluid-filled. In some cases, imaging such as ultrasound or MRI may be used to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes.
Treatment Options at SOMA
Not all ganglion cysts require treatment. However, if the cyst is painful, unsightly, or interfering with movement, we offer:
- Observation – In mild cases, we may monitor the cyst over time
- Wrist bracing or splinting – To relieve pressure and reduce cyst size
- Aspiration – A minimally invasive procedure that drains the fluid
- Surgical removal – Recommended for recurrent or symptomatic cysts
Our approach is designed to relieve discomfort and restore hand function with the least invasive method possible.
