Mallet Finger

What is Mallet Finger?

Mallet finger—sometimes called baseball finger—is an injury to the tendon that straightens the tip of the finger. It typically occurs when the finger is jammed or hit by a direct force, causing the tendon to tear or pull away from the bone. As a result, the fingertip droops and cannot be straightened on its own.

Mallet finger is a common injury in sports and everyday accidents, and it requires prompt attention to ensure proper healing and avoid permanent deformity.

Common Symptoms

  • Inability to straighten the fingertip without assistance
  • Drooping of the fingertip, even when the rest of the finger is extended
  • Pain, swelling, or bruising around the fingertip
  • Tenderness over the top of the finger joint
  • Sometimes a small fracture may accompany the tendon injury

How We Diagnose It

Dr. Pittas will perform a physical exam to assess the position and movement of your finger. An X-ray is usually recommended to check for bone involvement or small fractures at the tendon’s attachment point.

Treatment Options at SOMA

Most cases of mallet finger can be treated non-surgically, especially when addressed early. Treatment options include:

  1. Splinting – The most common approach, keeping the fingertip straight 24/7 for 6–8 weeks to allow the tendon to heal
  2. Monitoring and follow-up – To ensure the joint does not droop during healing
  3. Surgical treatment – Recommended for complex cases involving large fractures, joint misalignment, or failed non-surgical healing

We work closely with you to ensure comfort, compliance, and a full return to function.
