What is De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis?
De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis is a painful condition that affects the tendons on the thumb side of your wrist. It occurs when the tendons that move the thumb become irritated or inflamed, making it difficult to grip, pinch, or twist. Everyday activities like lifting a child, opening a jar, or texting can become uncomfortable or even painful.
Common Symptoms
Pain and swelling at the base of the thumb or side of the wrist
Discomfort that worsens with gripping, twisting, or lifting
A catching or snapping sensation when moving the thumb
Difficulty making a fist or pinching
Tenderness or a visible bump along the wrist near the thumb
How We Diagnose It
Dr. Pittas will examine your wrist and thumb, and may perform a Finkelstein test—a simple motion test that stretches the tendons and helps confirm the diagnosis based on your pain response. Imaging is rarely necessary.
Treatment Options at SOMA
We offer both conservative and advanced treatments based on the severity of your symptoms:
